Overview

Volcanic mountain paradise with virgin alpine forests, wetlands, marshes, and winter snow monster formations.

Cluster of volcanic peaks south of Aomori city, offering dramatically different experiences depending on the season. In winter, the slopes are famous for "snow monsters" (juhyo), trees encased in wind-sculpted ice formations that create an eerie frozen landscape you can explore on snowshoes or backcountry skis. An aerial ropeway carries you up to the highland, where summer and autumn reveal alpine marshes thick with wildflowers and virgin beech forests blazing with color. Hot springs dot the base of the mountains, and a soak at Sukayu Onsen's enormous hiba wood bathhouse is a fitting end to any Hakkoda outing.

Local tips

A volcanic range north of Aomori City reaching 1,585 meters, known for one of Japan's most severe rime ice phenomena in winter. The trees on the upper slopes are coated in white ice from November through March, forming juhyo (snow monsters) comparable to those at Zao. The Hakkoda Ropeway accesses the upper slopes year-round. The walking trail from the top descends through old-growth beech forest to Sukayu Onsen (3 to 4 hours). Summer snowfields persist on north-facing slopes well into June.
