五大堂
Perched on an islet jutting into Matsushima Bay, reached by vermilion-lacquered bridge.
A small vermillion-lacquered hall perched on a tiny island jutting into Matsushima Bay, connected by a red bridge that frames iconic views of the pine-studded islands. Built in 1604 by Date Masamune, the hall opens its doors only once every 33 years to reveal five Buddhist statues within. The temple offers one of the best vantage points for appreciating Japan's celebrated scenic bay.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
