The vermilion torii run in an unbroken corridor up Mt. Inari, and the shrine never closes. Walk in before 7am and the gate tunnels are yours. Arrive at 10am and you photograph the back of someone's head. Most visitors turn around at the Yotsutsuji viewpoint, about 45 minutes up, where the city opens out below.
Local tips
Start climbing by 6 AM. The lower gates are empty and golden in morning light. The full loop takes 2-3 hours.
