Overview
Try weaving Hakata-ori silk, a 770-year textile tradition used for obi sashes, on a traditional floor loom.
Hakata-ori is one of Japan's most prestigious textile traditions, dating to 1241 when a Hakata merchant brought silk-weaving techniques from Song Dynasty China. At the Hakata Traditional Craft Center, visitors can try weaving on traditional looms, creating a small coaster or bookmark. The tight, thick weave of genuine Hakata-ori takes years to master.
Local tips
Book the weaving experience a day ahead. It's 1,500 yen for a coaster you keep. The master weavers working in the back are mesmerizing to watch.
