Ashinomaki Onsen
芦ノ牧温泉
Overview
Ashinomaki Onsen sits in the Okawa River valley about 25 minutes by car from central Aizu-Wakamatsu. The village dates back roughly 1,200 years and makes a practical base for visiting nearby attractions like the preserved post-town of Ouchi-juku and the dramatic To-no-Hetsuri river gorge. Several ryokan and guesthouses line the valley, most welcoming day visitors for a soak alongside overnight guests. Forest trails and rental cycling routes run through the area. Note that Ashinomaki Station is not within walking distance of the baths, so arrange transport in advance with your accommodation.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
