Overview

Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is home to a troop of 120 wild Japanese macaques that gather freely throughout the park, where they can be fed and closely observed from the park’s visitor center.

A troop of 120 wild Japanese macaques roams freely at Iwatayama, a forested hillside 160 meters above Kyoto. Kyoto University primatologists have studied this troop since 1954, and every monkey has a name. You can buy peanuts and apple slices inside the visitor center and feed them through wire mesh, while the monkeys wander at will around you. The climb takes about 20 minutes but rewards with one of the clearest panoramic views of Kyoto city available without a ticket. Early morning tends to be quieter.
