Around 200 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live year-round in the strait between the Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa's Shimoshima Island, feeding in the nutrient-rich waters. Small boats depart from Futae Port for close encounters with the pod, sighting rates exceed 98 percent. The surrounding Amakusa islands preserve hidden Christian churches and a slower pace far from mainland Kumamoto.
