Overview

Quiet UNESCO gassho-zukuri village with 20 thatched farmhouses and mountain panorama views.

A UNESCO World Heritage village of 20 steeply thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses in the remote Gokayama valley. Less visited than nearby Shirakawa-go, Ainokura retains the quiet atmosphere of a living mountain community. Several houses operate as minshuku guesthouses, and the village lookout provides a panoramic view of thatched roofs against forested mountains.

Local tips

One of the UNESCO World Heritage gasshō-zukuri farmhouse clusters in the Gokayama valley. Ainokura has fewer visitors than neighboring Shirakawago and a smaller, more intimate footprint with 9 farmhouses clustered on a hillside terrace. The Suganuma cluster nearby has a fire prevention museum and even fewer visitors. Overnight stays in the village farmhouse inns are available and should be booked at least 2 months in advance for peak autumn and winter illumination periods.
