Okuoi is the deep-mountain backcountry of northern Shizuoka, where the Oi River cuts through gorges of cedar and cypress forest and the Oigawa Railway's Ikawa Line — Japan's only commercial Abt-rack route — climbs into terrain you cannot reach by road. The Okuoi Rainbow Bridge spans a turquoise reservoir to the remote Okuoikojo Station, perched on a narrow strip of land where the line turns sharply back over the water. Further upstream, the Ikawa Yume-no-Tsuribashi suspension bridge sways 200 meters above the gorge, threading hikers across narrow ironwood planks above the Oi's signature mineral-blue water. Sumatakyō, a side gorge, holds another suspension bridge over a 90-meter-deep ravine where the water shifts from emerald to deep blue with the season. Steam locomotives of the Oigawa Main Line run vintage rolling stock through tea-growing valleys downstream — the route is one of the only places in Japan where you can still ride a regular daily-service steam train. Access via Kawanehon and Senzu.
