Overview

National Treasure Zen temple built with zero nails, aligned on a Ming Dynasty central axis.

Takaoka's Soto Zen temple is a National Treasure whose 17th-century buildings were assembled entirely with interlocking wood joints and not a single nail. The symmetrical complex mirrors Ming Dynasty Chinese architecture, unusual for a Japanese temple. Its sanmon gate, butsuden hall, and hatto lecture hall are aligned on a central axis, surrounded by a gravel courtyard raked in meditative patterns.
