Zuigan-ji Temple

Zuiganji in Matsushima was rebuilt in 1609 by Date Masamune as both his family temple and a memorial for his afterlife. The slate approach passes Kamakura-period meditation caves carved into rock faces. The plain white-and-dark-wood exterior contrasts deliberately with the richly decorated interior, where elaborate coffered ceilings, colorful screen paintings, and detailed carvings signal the Date family's wealth and taste. During the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, residents took refuge here; the main buildings were spared while the ancient cryptomeria trees lining the approach were lost. The main hall, kitchen building, and entrance hall are all designated National Treasures.
