Thirty-three Zen temples clustered as a spiritual fortress near Hirosaki Castle since 1610.
Thirty-three Soto Zen temples line two atmospheric streets southwest of Hirosaki Castle, relocated here in 1610 as a spiritual fortress against evil spirits based on feng shui. Moss-covered stone paths wind between wooden gates, centuries-old statues, and quiet graveyards. Choshoji Temple anchors the far end with an imposing gate built in 1629.
