Overview

Zengoro Falls near Mt. Norikura in Nagano drops 21.5 meters across an 8-meter-wide face of volcanic rock formed some 43,000 years ago after the mountain's last eruption. The falls are named after a local logger who is said to have barely escaped with his life after hooking a giant char that nearly dragged him into the river. In winter, reduced sunlight causes the water to freeze into a deep blue formation, and the completely frozen falls become a popular snowshoeing destination. Nearby trails connect to other waterfalls and viewpoints around Norikura, making this a natural stop on a longer walk through the area.
