Overview

Popular road for scenic drives, known for its snow corridor, autumn colors & views of waterfalls.

Spectacular mountain road winding through the Zao mountain range between Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures, offering dramatically different scenery with each season. In late April through May, the road reopens after winter closure with towering snow walls lining both sides, sometimes reaching heights of over 10 meters, creating a surreal white corridor for drivers and walkers. Summer brings lush alpine meadows and access to the emerald-green Okama Crater Lake, while autumn paints the mountainsides in sweeping waves of red, orange, and gold. The route also passes several waterfalls, and the views from the higher elevations stretch across the volcanic landscape that gives Zao its dramatic character.
