Overview
Top-three Inari shrine rivaling Fushimi Inari in beauty, without the crowds.
Yutoku Inari Shrine in Kashima, Saga Prefecture, is one of Japan's three designated great Inari shrines, built in 1688 on a forested hillside above the town. Vermillion-lacquered shrine buildings climb the slope on stilts, connected by covered staircases and walkways, with the main hall perched at a height that gives views across the rooftops to the surrounding landscape. The atmosphere is genuinely peaceful compared to the famous Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. Fox messenger statues line the paths, and the shrine hosts seasonal rituals drawing local worshippers throughout the year.
