Overview
10th-century shrine to the kami credited with discovering Arima's springs; sits above the onsen quarter.
The shinto counterpart to Onsen-ji, founded around the same era and listed in the 10th-century Engishiki shrine register. Yusen Shrine sits at the top of Yumotozaka, the climb steepening through cedar shade for the last hundred meters. The kami enshrined here, Onamuchi-no-Mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, are the discoverers of Arima's springs in Japanese mythology. The grounds are quieter than Onsen-ji and offer a long view back down over the onsen quarter. Stone steps can be slippery when wet.
Local tips
The climb is steeper than it looks on the map. Wear shoes with grip if it has rained. Empty most weekday mornings.
