湯坂路(ハイキングコース)
Overview
Before the Edo period (1603–1867), when the Tokaido highway was the main route through Hakone, travelers would use the ancient Yusakamichi road to cross this mountainous region.
Mountain path established in the ninth century, predating the Tokaido highway as the main crossing through Hakone. Starting at Hakone-Yumoto, the 10.4-kilometer trail passes Shojingaike pond, known for its stone Buddhist statues carved by pilgrims seeking protection on the road. In 1180, Minamoto no Yoritomo traveled this route after defeat in battle, taking shelter at Hakone Shrine before rebuilding his forces, eventually establishing the Kamakura shogunate in 1185. Generations of Minamoto samurai later walked the same path to pay their respects. The full trail is now maintained as a hiking course and ends near Hakone Shrine.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
