Craft delicate washi paper lanterns with intricate cutwork designs at this Tottori artisan studio.
Yurarin Studio in Kurayoshi runs workshops where visitors make traditional washi paper lanterns using handmade paper produced in the Tottori region. The process involves stretching dampened sheets of washi over frames, layering pieces, and finishing with decorative elements, all guided by instructors at a pace suited to first-timers. Completed lanterns are carried out the same day. The studio sits in Kurayoshi's old white-walled storeroom district, where the combination of the historic streetscape and the paper-making craft tradition gives the town much of its character. Sessions typically run about 90 minutes and advance booking is recommended, particularly on weekends and during autumn foliage season.
