湯の川温泉足湯
Free open-air footbaths at Hakodate's oldest hot spring district, where you soak your feet while watching planes land at the adjacent airport.
Yunokawa is one of Hokkaido's three great hot spring districts, with springs gushing over 7,000 tons daily. While the ryokan charge for full baths, several free ashiyu (footbaths) are scattered along the streets. The most unique one sits near the shore where you can simultaneously soak your feet in mineral-rich water and watch planes descend into Hakodate Airport just across the road. Locals come here to unwind after work.
Visit at dusk when the airport runway lights create a surreal backdrop to your footbath. Bring a small towel as none are provided.
