Overview

The Yukiguni (“Snow Country”) Botanical Gardens contain over 850 species of plants native to the snow-heavy satoyama areas of Nagaoka.

The Yukiguni Botanical Gardens in Nagaoka preserve over 850 plant species native to the snow-heavy satoyama foothills, the traditional landscape where communities once farmed, foraged, and gathered firewood sustainably. With urban migration leaving many satoyama areas unmanaged and overrun by invasive species, the gardens were established in 1984 as a conservation space, intentionally wild-looking rather than manicured. Spring brings the yukiwariso primrose, Nagaoka's local symbol, which carpets hillsides in pink, white, and purple as soon as snow melts. Staff are primarily senior volunteers, and fireflies can be seen from mid-June to early July during special evening hours.
