Yuigahama
beach
由比ヶ浜海水浴場
Kamakura's main beach curves along Sagami Bay, popular with Tokyo day-trippers for surfing, swimming, and seaside cafes.
Yuigahama runs for about two kilometers along the coast of Kamakura and is the city's most accessible beach. In summer the sand fills with swimmers, the sea house opens for changing and showers, and food stalls line the approach. Outside the July-August peak, the beach is significantly quieter and takes on a different character, with surfers working the winter swells and the Great Buddha visible in the hills behind the town on clear days. The walk along the shore toward Enoshima Island is pleasant at any time of year. The beach connects directly to Kamakura's downtown, so it's easy to build a half-day that combines swimming or walking with the town's temples and shops.
