Yoshinogawa Sake Museum Joh-gura
吉乃川 洒ミュージアム 「醸蔵」
Overview
Yoshinogawa Sake Brewery is the oldest sake brewery in Niigata Prefecture.
Yoshinogawa is Niigata's oldest sake brewery, tracing its origins to 1548 when a former retainer of daimyo Uesugi Kenshin began brewing in the Settaya district. The Joh-gura museum occupies a century-old concrete warehouse, now a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property, where visitors can taste sake, explore brewery history, and play a tablet game simulating each step of the brewing process. Yoshinogawa uses only Niigata-grown rice, including rice the brewers cultivate themselves during the off-season, alongside soft water drawn from the on-site Tenka Kanro Sen well. Admission is free; tasting has a separate charge.
