Overview

Yoshikawa Eiji (1892–1962) is considered one of Japan’s greatest historical novelists.

Yoshikawa Eiji, considered one of Japan's greatest historical novelists, lived in this house from 1944 until his death in 1962, writing several novels here including The Heike Story. His spacious home has been preserved as a museum, with sliding doors that open rooms onto the garden much as he would have used them. The collection holds over 100 of his books alongside film posters, illustrations, and photographs of Yoshikawa and his circle. He received both the Cultural Order of Merit and the Order of the Sacred Treasure in his final years. The house offers a grounded, personal portrait of a writer whose work, including the novel Musashi, shaped how many Japanese readers understood their own history.
