Yoshiwara (The Venice of Japan)

Located in northern Kyoto prefecture, this 'Kyoto by the Sea' features traditional wooden homes where the ground floor serves as a 'funaya' (boathouse). Narrow canals wind through the neighborhood, and the smell of the sea is everywhere. It is a quiet, uncommercialized version of the more famous Ine boathouses, perfect for a slow coastal walk.
