Overview

The natural hot springs (onsen) in the town of Yomogihira first became popular after the building of Koryu Shrine in 1390.

Yomogihira Onsen sits in a mountain valley about 20 minutes by car from Nagaoka Station, clustered around Koryu Shrine, which has stood here since 1390. The first inn opened in 1869 and remained a local secret until a road connected the area to Nagaoka in 1965. The waters are said to benefit skin condition and ease stress. Before entering Koryu Shrine, it is customary to buy eggs and sake from the small shop near the stairway as an offering to the shrine's dragon deity. A short walk behind the shrine leads to Takenokochi Fudo Waterfall, dropping about 10 meters into a rocky basin.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
