Overview

One of Japan's two great Soto Zen temples, reached through a lane to imposing sacred grounds.

Walk up a quiet lane, pass through a simple gate, and you enter the serene grounds of one of the two head temples of the Soto Zen school in Japan. Founded in 1322, Yomei-ji maintains an atmosphere of deep contemplation, monks in training may be spotted crossing between buildings, and the gardens are meticulously kept without feeling ornamental. The main hall and surrounding structures reflect centuries of careful preservation. At 300 yen admission, it offers a genuinely peaceful temple experience away from tourist crowds.

Local tips

Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
