横手かまくら会場
450-year-old February festival where hundreds of candlelit snow igloos line the streets.
Each February, hundreds of igloo-like snow houses called kamakura fill the streets of this southeastern Akita city in a tradition spanning 450 years. Inside each two-meter-tall dome, a snow altar honors the water deity, while children offer hot amazake and mochi to visitors who duck inside. The riverside mini-kamakura display, hundreds of candle-lit snow domes reflecting in the water, is breathtaking at dusk.
