Overview
Yayoi Kusama's iconic yellow polka-dot pumpkin sculpture at the end of the Benesse House pier.
Yayoi Kusama's most photographed sculpture, set at the end of a small pier on the Tsutsuji-so beach below Benesse House. The original 1994 pumpkin was washed away by typhoon Lupit in August 2021 and replaced in October 2022 with a near-identical recast that addressed the typhoon vulnerability. Reaching the pumpkin requires a fifteen-minute walk down from the museum; the photo opportunity is most striking at sunrise or sunset.
Local tips
Sunrise is quieter than sunset; the south-facing position means morning light from the east hits the pumpkin's face directly.
