Overview
Starting in the early 1600s, a significant portion of the iron produced in the regions of Okuizumo and Hōki (western Tottori Prefecture) was shipped out through the port of Yasugi.
From the early 1600s, iron produced in the mountains of Okuizumo and Hoki moved through Yasugi Port on the calm waters of Lake Nakaumi. Warehouses of iron and steel brokers lined the waterfront, alongside rice and cotton traders, restaurants, and inns full of passing merchants. The port thrived for three centuries until the San'in railway line arrived in 1908, making boat transport uneconomical. The town's story then shifted: it reinvented itself as a production center for high-grade steel, a legacy that continues today.
