In this handwritten letter, Isoroku recounts the story of a recent school trip to his brother, Takano Kihachi, who was living in Tokyo’s Ueno district and studying to be.
The Yamamoto Isoroku Memorial Museum in Nagaoka documents the life of the admiral born Takano Isoroku in 1884 into a samurai family with a tradition of poetry and verse alongside military service. The museum traces his studies at Harvard and work at the Japanese Embassy in Washington, through his consistent opposition to Japan's alliance with Germany and Italy, to his role commanding the combined fleet. Personal letters and postcards to his brother Kihachi reveal both his humor and his deepening anxiety as the Pacific War dragged on. A sword commissioned by Emperor Hirohito and donated by Isoroku's eldest son is among the collection's most significant artifacts.
