Overview

Yakushima Lighthouse, located near the Seibu Rindo Forest Path in the northwest of the island, was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Located near the Seibu Rindo Forest Path in the northwest of the island, Yakushima Lighthouse was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), Taiwan became a Japanese territory and trade rapidly increased between the islands. Yakushima Lighthouse became an important navigational aid for ships coming from the south. Its church-like design was based on a British lighthouse, and it is now a popular location for newly-married couples to take photos. Visitors are encouraged to take a look behind the lighthouse, where they will find a small shrine dedicated to Ebisu, the Japanese god of fishermen.
