Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center

This center near Miyanoura ferry port is worth visiting before heading into Yakushima's forests. Permanent exhibitions cover the island's geological formation, its layered ecosystems, and the ways communities have lived alongside the mountains, sea, and cedar forests over generations. English explanations and subtitled films make the content accessible to international visitors. A JNTO-certified tourist information counter on the ground floor can help with trail planning and transport. Entry to the exhibitions and theater costs 520 yen for adults. The center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Monday openings added during summer holidays.
