Overview

On the flank of Mt. Iwate, this roughly 1-kilometer trail crosses a Special Natural Monument: a dramatic lava flow designated a National Park Special Protection Zone in 1956. The terrain looks barren at first, but frogs, dragonflies, and Eurasian sparrowhawks appear if you slow down. Views of the mountain and surrounding forest shift with each season, from summer green to autumn color to deep winter snow. Wear sturdy footwear as the surface is loose rock. There are no toilets or water sources on site, so come prepared. Budget about an hour for the round trip.
