Yagisawa Kannondō Temple

Yagisawa Kannondo is the oldest building in Yagisawa hamlet, surviving a major fire in 1809, and has served as the 14th station on the Ueda Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage since at least 1755. This local circuit mirrors the Kyoto Kannon pilgrimage, allowing residents to make an equivalent devotional journey without traveling to the capital. The principal Kannon statue holds a lotus bud in one hand and forms a gesture of fearlessness with the other, traditionally associated with protecting women in childbirth. The porch beams carry carvings of dragons and komainu: the dragon as a Buddhist fire talisman, the komainu from Shinto tradition, together representing the historic overlap of the two religions.
