The suikinkutsu water music at Hosen-in is a unique experience.
Hosen-in Temple in northern Kyoto is home to a suikinkutsu, a piece of traditional garden engineering that produces a delicate musical sound. An overturned ceramic pot, partially covered with pebbles, collects water dripping from a nearby stone basin. Each drop falls into a small pool inside the pot, creating a resonant, tinkling echo compared to the sound of a koto or Buddhist chanting. Visitors press their ear to a bamboo tube on the walkway behind the reception hall to hear it clearly. It is a subtle experience, meditative and completely unlike anything else in the city.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
