Overview

Hilltop castle on Torafusu Hill with gardens, panoramic city views, and museum of samurai artifacts and local history.

Wakayama Castle sits on Torafusu hill at the center of the city, a white-walled tower complex surrounded by a moat and extensive stone walls first built in the 1580s. The main keep was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in concrete in 1958, with an interior museum documenting the Kishu Tokugawa clan who ruled from here for over 250 years. The grounds work well in spring when cherry trees line the walls, and the garden area to the east, Momijidani, is one of the better autumn foliage spots in the Kansai region.
