Overview
Wakasakanai Park sits within the Sarobetsu Wetlands, part of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, and a boardwalk carries visitors over nearly 70 square kilometers of marshland with views toward the volcanic cone of Mt. Rishiri on a nearby island. Red-crowned cranes and white-tailed eagles live here year-round. Wildflowers take turns blooming from May through late August: cinquefoil in May, followed by a rotating cast of alpine and wetland species, with peak bloom running through mid to late July. The boardwalk is flat and easy to walk.
