Overview

Wakamiya Jinja is an auxiliary shrine located outside the torii gate that marks the entrance to the Jogu (Upper Shrine) area of Usa Jingu Shrine.

Wakamiya Jinja sits just outside the torii gate of Usa Jingu Shrine's Upper Shrine area and enshrines five children of Emperor Ojin, who is worshipped as Hachiman, the main deity of the complex. Most notable among them is Osasagi no Mikoto, who became Emperor Nintoku after his father's death. According to Usa Jingu records, an 824 oracle from Hachiman commanded that a shrine be built for his divine children, and Wakamiya was constructed in 852. The current buildings date to 1843 and were repaired in 2009. The shrine's deities are said to offer protection from misfortune and disasters.
