1500 year old cherry tree and national treasure.
Usuzumi Park in Motosu, Gifu, is home to a cherry tree said to be over 1,500 years old and designated a National Natural Monument. Tradition holds it was planted by Emperor Keitai in the 5th century. The tree's name, meaning pale ink cherry, describes how the blossoms shift from pink to white to a soft grayish hue as they age on the branch. During peak bloom in mid-April, the massive gnarled trunk, propped up by wooden supports, is lit at night. Around 8,000 additional trees in the surrounding park create a full pink canopy. Arriving on a weekday helps avoid the largest hanami crowds that gather here each spring.
