Nioza Historical Road

Stone-paved lanes wind between earthen walls and wooden gates in this well-preserved samurai district in Usuki, Oita Prefecture. The atmospheric stillness here is genuine, with moss-covered walls, traditional gardens glimpsed through latticed fences, and temple gates opening onto quiet courtyards. Usuki is equally known for over 60 stone Buddha figures carved into cliff faces on the town's outskirts, designated a National Treasure and dating from the late Heian to Kamakura periods. The town is compact and walkable in a half day. Local fugu restaurants add a culinary reason to linger. The combination of samurai heritage and ancient Buddhist sculpture makes for a richly layered historical afternoon.
