有珠善光寺
4.2Est. 60Date, Hokkaido
Overview
One of the oldest temples in Hokkaido, dating to 826 AD.
While most of Hokkaido’s history is modern, this temple has roots going back over 1,000 years. It was officially established as a major temple by the Shogunate in 1804. The grounds are famous for their ancient cherry trees and stone Buddhas that have survived numerous volcanic eruptions from nearby Mount Usu. It is a rare pocket of ancient Japanese spirituality in the north.
