The Umegashira Kiln is a preserved earthen tunnel dug into a hillside, once part of a major Sue ware production center. As wood fuel was exhausted, new kilns were cut farther up the slope. The draw is the ruin's intact state; some spent kilns were also used to bury deceased artisans.
