Mountain hot-spring resort on the Shimabara Peninsula, with sulfur-steaming Unzen Jigoku 'hells' walking trails right in the village center and the ropeway to Mt. Unzen and Mt. Yadake on the southern edge. Unzen was the first national park in Japan when designated in 1934. The town's Christian martyrs history adds a quiet undertow to the geothermal showmanship.
Local tips
Visit Unzen Jigoku in the morning steam; the boardwalks are most atmospheric before the sun burns the steam off. Pair with the Mt. Unzen Ropeway for an afternoon view.
