Uminomichi Munakatakan Museum

Across from Hetsu-miya Shrine, this museum covers the history of Munakata Taisha, one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Because Okinoshima is closed to visitors, 3D films and a surround-screen presentation recreate what the sacred island looks like and explain its ritual significance. Exhibitions in Japanese and English walk through all three shrines of Munakata Taisha and the ancient sea routes connecting Japan to mainland Asia. A craft room runs regular workshops where visitors can try making magatama, the comma-shaped beads once used as offerings on Okinoshima. Rental bikes, free lockers, a cafe, and a library are all available on site.
