Overview

Riverside park on a midstream island in the Uji River; the canonical strolling spot between Byodo-in and Ujigami Shrine.

A linear park on a midstream island in the Uji River, connected to both banks by pedestrian bridges. The park sits between Byodo-in on the south bank and Ujigami Shrine on the north, making it the canonical strolling spot for visitors crossing between the two UNESCO sites. The cherry blossom planting along the south path peaks in early April; the Tonoshima section at the eastern end is quieter and has the better view back at Byodo-in's pavilion.

Local tips

Free, open 24 hours. Cormorant fishing demonstrations (a tradition continuing from the Heian era) run summer evenings; book ferry tickets at the park's south office.
