Overview
This hot spring town with 80 individual water sources was once a beloved retreat for writers. Uchinomaki has over 20 hotels and inns, as well as six public baths that visitors can enjoy for a small fee. Each bath is fed by a different water source, so there is a variety of temperatures and mineral contents, and some of the outdoor baths offer panoramic views of Aso’s five peaks.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
