Uchiko Yokaichi-Gokoku District

内子町八日市・護国地区
Preserved Edo merchant street of former wax magnates with an active 1916 kabuki theater.
A perfectly preserved merchant street where white-walled, lattice-fronted buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods line a 600-meter stretch once home to Japan's wealthiest wax producers. The Kamihaga Residence reveals the opulent lifestyle of a wax merchant dynasty, while the Uchiko-za kabuki theater from 1916 still hosts performances. The town produces craft candles using traditional methods.
