Ubushina Shrine

Ubushina Shrine in Utazu traces its records to 807, when it moved to its current hillside site. The main sanctuary is a relocated structure that previously stood at Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture. It was moved to Ubushina when Ise's buildings were rebuilt in one of their regular 20-year renewal cycles, and it holds Registered Tangible Cultural Property status. Behind it stands a towering rock, 5.5 meters high, that was the original object of worship here, predating the practice of housing deities in buildings. The shrine grounds also house several smaller sub-shrines and, somewhat unexpectedly, an udon noodle restaurant.
