Seven mystical ponds hidden in primeval beech forest, connected by a peaceful 2.5km trail that few visitors outside Aomori know about.
The Tsuta Nananuma (Seven Ponds of Tsuta) are a cluster of mirror-still ponds nestled in ancient beech forest near Tsuta Onsen. A well-maintained 2.5km trail connects the most accessible ponds. Tsuta-numa, Kagami-numa, and Tsuki-numa, each reflecting the surrounding canopy in their dark, clear waters. The autumn reflection of golden beech leaves in Tsuta-numa has become an iconic photograph, but the trail remains blissfully uncrowded.
Arrive at the Tsuta-numa pond before sunrise in mid-October. The first light hitting the golden beech canopy reflected in the still water is one of Tohoku's most photographed moments, but you need to be there by 5:30am.
