Tsushima Shrine
津嶋神社
Overview
Offshore shrine on a tiny Mitoyo island, connected by a bridge opened only during the August festival.
Tsushima Shrine in Mitoyo sits close to the water at the edge of the Sanuki plain, dedicated to a deity associated with water and the safety of fishing communities. The approach passes under a stone torii and through a pair of camphor trees that frame the main hall. The grounds are small but maintained with care, and the combination of coastal proximity and traditional shrine architecture gives the site a composed, unhurried atmosphere. Local fishermen have maintained devotional ties to the shrine for generations, and the votive offerings inside the hall reflect this relationship with the sea. It's a short stop within easy reach of the Chichibugahama reflecting beach, one of the most photographed tidal flats in Shikoku.
